Seven Shades is a compelling stage production that peels back the layers of masculinity to reveal the emotional, spiritual, and psychological complexities black men often carry in silence. Through seven distinct male archetypes, the play journeys into themes of love, fatherhood, ambition, vulnerability, pride, faith, pain, and redemption.
With Stubbs’ signature blend of gripping dialogue, heartfelt storytelling, and moments of unexpected humor, the production challenges audiences to confront stereotypes and reexamine cultural narratives surrounding manhood. Each “shade” represents a reflection of men we know — fathers, sons, leaders, lovers, and friends — revealing both their strengths and their struggles.
SSOM’s production of Seven Shades brings to stage an all-male cast with original music written and produced by Grammy and Stellar songwriting nominee, Stan Stubbs, who partnered with Zerek Baker as song writer.
“This play is about giving voice to the conversations men don’t always feel safe having,” says playwright Stan Stubbs who was born and raised in Chicago. “It’s about honesty. It’s about healing. And it’s about understanding that strength includes vulnerability.”
